No one knows what causes scleroderma. It is more common in women and can be either mild or severe. There is no cure, but various treatments can relieve symptoms. Fifth Disease According to the Centers for Disease Control, "Fifth disease is a mild rash illness that occurs most commonly in children. The ill child typically has a "slapped-cheek" rash on the face and a lacy red rash on the trunk and limbs. Occasionally, the rash may itch. An ill child may have a low-grade fever, malaise, or a "cold" a few days before the rash breaks out. The child is usually not very ill, and the rash resolves in 7 to 10 days." Some people are affected more than others. Symptoms in some people are hardly noticeable. This particular disorder is a virus that only affects humans and is spread by saliva and/or mucus contact. Males and females are affected at about the same rate. Washing hands can help prevent the spread of the disease. Shingles According to Medline Plus, "Shingles is a disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus - the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you have chickenpox, the virus stays in your body. It may not cause problems for many years. As you get older, the virus may reappear as shingles. Unlike chickenpox, you can't catch shingles from someone who has it. Early signs of shingles include burning or shooting pain and tingling or itching, usually on one side of the body or face. The pain can be mild to severe. Blisters then form and last from one to 14 days. If shingles appears on your face, it may affect your vision or hearing. The pain of shingles may last for weeks, months or even years after the blisters have healed. There is no cure for shingles. Early treatment with medicines that fight the virus may help.
