Herbal Remedies for Depression

There is a world of difference between "feeling depressed" and suffering from true clinical depression. Some people describe clinical depression as living in a big, black hole from which there is no escape or they may have a feeling of impending doom. People who are clinically depressed cannot escape their despair and unhappiness. However, there are some people suffering from clinical depression do not feel the least bit sad. Instead, they feel empty and lifeless. They are in an apathetic state and are unable to experience pleasure. Even when they are participating in activities they once enjoyed, they feel as if they are just going through the motions. Sometimes, a person will withdraw altogether. Signs and symptoms of depression vary from person to person, and, over time, they may wax and wane in severity.

One very popular natural depression remedy is St. John's Wort. This herbal supplement has demonstrated to have positive effects similar to prescription drugs for depression, but the herbal supplement has fewer side effects. Some side effects of St John's Wort include an increased sensitivity to light, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, and dizziness.

Some other herbal remedies that are becoming increasingly popular for curing mild depression are Ginkgo Biloba, Black Cohosh, and Kava Kava. These herbal remedies are used for a certain kind of depression. People who use Ginkgo Biloba are mainly suffering from some forms of mild depression and memory loss. It also helps other dulled mental functions, as it is an aid to improving overall mental health. Kava Kava helps control anxiety that is associated with depression. It is able to calm a person and will help them fall asleep and will help people have a more restful sleep. Black Cohosh is the new kid on the block, but it shows much promise because of its ability to calm nerves, encourage sleep and increases daytime energy.

Targeted amino acid therapy, better known as TAAT, is also a natural remedy for mild depression. There are certain depressions that cause chemical imbalances in the brain. A test is performed to see what the imbalance is and then treatment is begun. There are four main kinds of amino acids that are used to make brain chemicals. They are 5-HTP, L-Tryptophan, L-Carnitine and SAM-e. For example, SAM-e is involved in methylation, which is the process of the body making brain chemicals. Therefore, this amino acid is involved in the production of serotonin.

In conclusion, it must be said that if you are going to take herbal remedies for depression, then it should be followed with some form of counseling with either a psychiatrist or a licensed clinical counselor. Every person responds to depression differently. If something is not working for you, try something else until you find something that works. Don't let depression get the best of you!
