Herbs and Ailments


This herbal guide will help you understand what each herb is known to help with and a little of how it works.

Sophora is applied to prevent internal bleeding of various origins: into brain, heart and retina of eyes. (From 10 drops 4-5 times a day to 1 tsp 2-3 times a day.) It is also used at stenocardia, hypertension, diabetes, at kidney and liver diseases, for stomach and duodenum ulcers, for gastritis and colitis, diarrhea, for typhus, sepsis, thrombophlebitis, for hemorrhoids, rheumatism, worms, and at early stages of tuberculosis. Externally tincture is applied to treat burns. Healing comes very quickly. Infusion has a soothing effect for various skin disorders. Sophora is also used for washing and cleaning of purulent wounds. Combine fresh Sophora beans and 70% alcohol (1:1) and let stand for 21 days in a dark place. Take 30-50 drops 3 times a day before meal. Dry beans are combined with vodka (1:2) Preparation of tincture and dosage are the same as above.

Slippery Elm Bark is very valuable for mucus inflammation of the lungs, bowels, stomach, kidneys and bladder. It will sustain ulcerated and cancerous stomach when nothing else will. Use the inner portion of the bark.

St. John's wort is applied at diseases of digestive tract, liver and kidneys, at hepatitis, stagnation of bile in the gall bladder, cholecystitis, at first symptoms of gall bladder stones, at gastritis, hepatitis and kidney diseases. It has a sedative and pain reducing effect. Use in treatment of neuralgia, anxiety, tension and similar problems. Good for menopausal irritations.St.John’s wort's tincture can also be used (30-40 drops in 1/2 cup of water) as a mouth wash to remove an unpleasant smell and for the strengthening of the gums. Put 20 g in 100 g of 70% alcohol. Let stand for 2 weeks, filter, squeeze out, filter again and keep in a dark bottle in a cool place. Take 40-50 drops 3-4 times a day.

Squaw Vine is excellent to take during pregnancy. Used for uterine problems, urinary troubles and other female complaints.

Sweet flag - Tincture made from Sweet flag (Calamus) is used to treat chronic gastritis, stomach and duodenum ulcers and diarrhea. It is also used, though less often, for hepatitis and bladder stones. Mix 20 g of sweet flag and 100 g of vodka, let stand for 2 weeks, filter, squeeze out the herb, filter one more time and keep in a dark bottle in a dark cool place. Take 15-30 drops 2-3 times a day before meal.

Tansy can be useful for treatment of nervous disorders, worms and jaundice. MUST BE AVOIDED DURING PREGNANCY.

Thyme has a high content of oil. Good for internal use for coughs, throat and asthma as well as external use for infected wounds.

Valerian is a nerve tonic. Used for epileptic fits and St. Vitus dance, nervous derangement or irritations. Excellent for children with measles and scarlet fever. Promotes sleep.

Wahoo is a primary liver herb, it acts to remove congestion from the liver allowing free flow of bile thereby helping the digestive process. Also used in the treatment of jaundice and bladder problems. Will also relive constipation.

White Oak Bark is good for varicose veins. Used in douches and enemas for internal tumors and swellings. One of the best remedies for piles and hemorrhoids, hemorrhages or any trouble of the rectum. It normalized the liver, kidneys and spleen.

Witch Hazel is a good tonic, it aids in treating menstruation, lungs, uterus, piles, circulation, tumors eyes and is effective as a douche. Use bark and leaves.

Wood Betony is an excellent healing herb for bronchitis, coughs and colds. Also good for kidney and bladder. This herb helps to correct a bed-wetting problem.

Yarrow is a tonic for run-down conditions and indigestion. If taken freely at the beginning of a cold, it will break it up in 24 hours. Has soothing and healing action on mucus membranes.

Yellow Dock is a plant rich in minerals, especially in iron. Excellent as a blood purifier and tones up the entire system.

Yucca is a hope for arthritics. The extract from the plant has been used with surprising success on arthritis and rheumatism sufferers.
