The causes of memory loss are varied. The brain is a sensitive machine and it is susceptible to any number of issues which could result in memory loss. While some forms of memory loss are gradual, others happen very quickly, such as in the case of an injury.
As we age, the likelihood of having memory issues is greater - in part because the brain cells die off as we get older and in part because the body doesn't produce enough of the right brain chemicals to keep things working perfectly.
Memory is basically divided into two types: short-term and long-term (there are plenty of in-betweens, too, if you're a doctor).
Some causes of memory loss are: age, physical or emotional trauma, medications, infections, seizures, alcohol abuse, stroke and Alzheimer's disease.
How do you know if your memory loss is normal or abnormal? If you read the FamilyDoctor.org website, they offer this:
Memory problems that aren't part of normal aging
Forgetting things much more often than you used to
Forgetting how to do things you've done many times before
Trouble learning new things
Repeating phrases or stories in the same conversation
Trouble making choices or handling money
Not being able to keep track of what happens each day
How do you get tested for memory loss?
According to the FDA website: "Doctors evaluate memory loss by taking a medical history, asking questions to test mental ability, conducting a physical and neurological examination, and performing blood and urine tests." A "CAT" scan or an "MRI" might also be used in the diagnosis process.
In the case of my grandfather, his memory loss was due to Alzheimer's disease. This particular disease follows a pretty clear pattern with regard to memory issues, such as misplacing items, getting lost on previously familiar streets, mixing up words and forgetting questions that were recently asked (and asking them again).
Memory loss is a difficult problem to deal with - not only for the person who has the memory loss, but also for everyone around that person.
There are some herbal treatments that have been used in the fight against memory loss. Here is a list of the herbs most often used to combat memory loss:
Bacopa
Ginkgo
Ginseng
Gotu Kola
Hawthorn
Oats
Periwinkle (Vinca minor)
Rosemary
Schisandra
These can be used individually or by combining two or more together.
